After a chic newyearsparty in one of those big houses you can see on American movies, we stayed on Bainbridge Island for a while. In a beautifull landscape. Now we're travelling in our blue 1978 VW-camper. We follow highway 101 along the coast of Washington and Oregon. Great nature, spectaculair coasts. We stay at stateparks, campings in the middle of nature.

We're in Seattle on Bainbridge Island at Willem en Kathy's place. We try to bring in a piece of dutch traditions by making 'oliebollen' and 'gluhwein'. At this moment the dough is rising, the oil is heating op outside. On TV we follow the Y2K happenings around the world. We're alomost the last to go into the new millenium. For everybody reading this we wish you a WORLDLY 2000 !!!

A major change in our travelplan. But thats what plans are for. Nothing is nicer than travelling with the possibility to go where you like We planned to go to Afrika, but we didn't wanted to go now. After our experience in India we wanted no pushy salespeople, treaters, bad busses en continues alertness for theft for a while. Undoubtfully it will be fantastic, but with its poverty it will have its shadowside. Vancouver, a complete different world! Cold and foggy now. Huge skycrapers, lots of shoppingmalls, very friendly people and everything is very clean. The souvenirshops remind us of the original population, the native indians. We see a few totempoles. Most of the people living here are white or asian. Now and then we think we're in Tokyo. Vancouver is surrounded by mountains with snow on the top, nice skiareas, which we can see from our appertment. After a merry X-mas and the view of lots of buying Canadians on boxingday we're going to Seattle to celebrate the new millenium. After that we want to travel to the south. Via San Fransisco to Middle- and South-America.

White beach, palmtrees, sea and 30 degrees Celsius! A complete different India here in Goa. The people are different, very friendly and the food is prepared hygenic, so we can enjoy again. A room 50 m. from the beach with view of the sea and the palmtress in the garden. In the morning rolling out of bed. Install ourselves in a beachchair by a beachbar/restaurant. The whole day sunbathing, swimming, eating and drinking. While drinking a cocktail looking at the sunset. In the evening diner by candlelight. A part of paradise on earth which we fully enjoy.

After a trip through the inlands of Tibet we arrived in Kathmandu. In Lhasa we hired a 4WD with six people for a trip of a week from Lhasa to the Nepalese border. In Tibet we came over mountains as high as 5200 meter, visited remote monasterys, stood on the foot of the Mount Everest, have been driving along the Friendship "Highway" where we have been stocked in the mudd several times and even under a waterfall etc. Again a great experience. After the impressive Tibet, with hardly trees or grass, we descended in approx. 3 hours to the green Nepal. A complete different nature, culture, different people, different foor. Kathmandu is a luxury compared to Tibet. Time for relaxing a while.

Here on an altitude of more then 3600 meter it is breathtaking. We are surrounded bij mountains, among which mountains with snow on the tops. The people from all over Tibet visit this place for shopping, selling of Yakskin, and overall visit as pelgrims. The most colourfull en special clothings, hairdress en skincolour.

In de dorpjes in het Zuidwesten van China (o.a. Lijiang + Dali) wanen wij ons 1/2 tot 1 eeuw terug. Veel mensen lopen nog in klederdracht, machines zijn er bijna niet en alles wordt met de hand gedaan. In de landbouw gaat van het omploegen van de grond tot het oogsten alles handmatig. In het huishouden wordt er nog veel op de hand in de rivier gewassen en gekookt op hout of samengeperste steenkool. Overal gaat wel een ontspannen sfeer van uit. De omgeving leent zich tot prachtige wandelingen door de bergen langs watervallen en om uren te dwalen over de rijst- en maisvelden. Het weer is OK. Af en toe een dagje regen en verder zo en rond de 25 graden.
As promised tot Wang Meng Li from Lijiang we've updated our site, though not exactly in three days. Thanks for the pizza and the wine in your cafe/restaurant. For people who read this Lijiang is a wonderfull and nice place to stay for a while.
19/9/99 Chengdu, China.
Van Shanghai over de Yangzi-rivier naar Chong Qing gevaren. Onderweg veel groene heuvels met o.a. landbouw. Alles wordt handmatig gedaan, van grond bewerken tot rotsblokken en kolen sjouwen. De dorpjes bestaan uit grauwe en rode flats en grote vervuilende fabrieken, die het landschap ontsieren. Verder een erg mooie omgeving waarvan we 200 km. lang door 3 grote kloven varen. Hoe zuidelijker, hoe exotischer de begroeing. Ook zien we veel kleine houten vissersbootjes met grote netten. Nu zijn we in de hoofdstad van de provincie Sichuan;Chengdu. Weer een drukke overbevolkte stad met grote wolkenkrabbers maar ook leuke Chinese buurtjes en tempels. Vanavond reizen we richting Dali in het zuiden. Daarna proberen we Lhasa te bereiken.
11/9/99 Shanghai, China.
In Qingdao gezwommen in de gele zee en persoonlijk toegezongen door een echte Beijing-opera-zangeres. Daarna met de slaapbus met stapelbedden naar Shanghai. Boten gingen niet meer. Een stukje real Chinese live meegemaakt onderweg, incl. heftige discussies en vervoer van o.a. kooien vol kanariepietjes. Nu in de grootste havenstad van China waar het 38 graden is en weer erg druk, maar wel mooi met veel koloniale gebouwen en typisch chinese buurtjes. Morgen gaan we beginnen aan een tocht van een week over de Yangzi-river, van Shanghai naar Chonqing. Overigens smaakt het eten hier net zo als in Nederland (als je tenminste de McDonalds bezoekt).
2/9/99 Beijing (Peking), China.
Net 2 drukke dagen vol excursies in Beijing achter de rug. Veel, heel veel mensen, fietsen en files. Men vervoert hier letterlijk alles op de fiets, van meubels, bloemen, mensen tot halve varkens! Een stuk van de Chinese muur beklommen en een bezoek gebracht aan de verboden stad, real China. Als blanke zijn wij voor de Chinezen weer een attractie. Communiceren is niet altijd even makkelijk, maar over het algemeen zijn de mensen heel aardig. Vanaf nu gaan we met z'n tweeen verder. Waarschijnlijk met de trein naar Qingdao (aan de oostkust), dan met de boot naar Shanghai.
27/8/99 Mongolie, Ulan Bator.
We zitten nu in de hoofdstad van Mongolie na 5 dagen treinen door Siberie. Veel verschillende landschappen en mensen gezien, een ware belevenis. Mongolie is bijna onbeschrijfelijk. Geweldige natuur, heel wijds en uitgestrekt. Afgelopen nacht geslapen in een Ger/Yurt (een nomadentent), paardemelk gedronken, tussen de kuddes koeien en paarden, schapen etc. Wat een ruimte hebben deze dieren, geweldig.
19/8/99 Moskou.
Dit is ons eerste bericht. We zitten nu in Moskou in ons hotel waar we kunnen internetten. We hebben al heel veel van Moskou gezien. Moskou is een grote stad, met de verwachte brede straten en kolossale gebouwen. De gebouwen zijn heel kleurrijk en divers. Veel mooier dan we hadden verwacht. Verder staat Moskou vol met monumenten en kerken. Over 2 uur gaan we naar de trein voor de grote treinreis.
